THIS WEEK’S EDITORIAL: REPORT FROM AD TECH SAN FRANCISCO

========================================

Greetings everyone,

I just got back from Ad Tech in San Francisco where I got to rub shoulders with people from web companies I work with every day like Google, Yahoo, and Commission Junction. I also enjoyed hearing from top executives of Kodak and NBC. I shook hands with Matthew Lesko the “Free Money from the Government” guy with all the question marks on his suit.

Here I am with the mascot from “eBuddy.com”
Sandy's eBuddy

One of my favorite parts was the keynote address by Jeff Hayzlett, Kodak’s Chief Marketing Officer. He talked about Kodak’s making their brand more “modern” with appearances on The Apprentice and other more “hip” advertising. (The keynote title was “Not Your Father’s Kodak”). Jeff is a real character whose only two rules are:

1. Is anyone gonna die?
2. Is it legal?

Also very interesting was a panel of teenagers who were asked questions about what they like for their web experience. According to this  panel, MySpace was definitely “out” and Facebook was the new thing.  I was surprised at how many of them cited the appeal of a socially conscious company. For example, they all mentioned a site called “freerice.com” that gives food to hungry people for correct answers to their quizzes. They can get smarter for their SAT tests and do something good at the same time.

Some tips they gave for all of us internet marketers is not to insult them by being too cutesy, as in doing things like spelling the word “cool” as “kewl” etc. They understand that the marketers need to make a buck but they appreciate not being too bombarded with ads–especially for things like new cars that are totally out of their price range!

I got a whole bunch of literature from everyone and I’m going to have a lot of fun sifting through it, but I’ll share the BEST stuff with you guys. :-)

Okay now here is the part I know you’ve all been waiting for…the FREE SWAG report! Marketing shows are the best for getting free stuff to shlep home with you. This time I got some cool hats, slippers, a Google clipboard, a CD holder, a Rubiks Cube, notebooks, hand sanitizers, lapel pins, mints, magnets, highlighters and keychains. I got some “bendies”, “squishys” and “tangles” to relieve my stress and, of course, the usual assortment of logo pens. I even got a USB audio headset!

Brain Transplant

A mid-level executive was so frustrated at being passed over
for promotion year after year, that, in frustration, he went to
a brain-transplant center in the hope of raising his I.Q. 20
points.

After a battery of physical and psychological tests, the
center’s director told him that he was an acceptable candidate.

“That’s great!” the executive said. “But I understand that this
procedure can be really expensive.”

“Yes, sir, it can,” the director replied. “An ounce of
accountant’s brain for example, costs one thousand dollars; an
ounce of an economist’s brain costs two thousand; an ounce of a
corporate president’s is forty-five thousand. An ounce of a
politicians brain is seventy-five thousand dollars.”

“Seventy-five thousand dollars for an ounce of a politicians
brain? Why on earth is that?”

“Do you have any idea,” the director asked, “how many
politicians we would have to kill?”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: PETEY’S PAGE

========================================
By Len Thurmond

I received this from my friend and colleague Eric Holmlund and wanted to pass it on.

As a parent, it touched me to my soul, and I knew I needed to help.

No matter where you are in your life, you are far more fortunate than this child, and any help you can give, will make you a better person.

Help Give Petey Freedom!
April 12th, 2008

Edition #162

I’ve been incredibly blessed.

As you may have noticed, I’ve promoted several products in this newsletter lately, and I’ve done quite well with those promotions.

So today it’s time to focus on giving again.

About two months ago I asked for your help raising funds for a fellow marketer who was experiencing some hardships, and many of you helped by ordering her product.

Today I’m asking you to help give a young man the freedom he deserves.

Petey is a 12 year old boy who suffers from a fatal disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

I learned about him from Jason Marshall, who was a contestant on The Next Internet Millionaire (the reality show I produced last year). Jason is a full time one-on-one aide for Petey, and he is passionate about giving this young man the best life he can.

Petey uses a power wheelchair. The problem is that a special van is needed to transport him and the wheelchair anywhere, and they don’t own a van that will accommodate him.

Jason can’t afford to buy the van for Petey on his own. He makes a very small salary, sacrificing his time as an act of service.

Petey’s family can’t afford to buy a van. Why not? He lives with his mother, who is a SINGLE MOM with NINE children! She’s doing the best she can, but they don’t even have a car.

I can hardly imagine being in that kind of situation.

We do have freedom, and that’s why I think we should help give Petey freedom.

Whether you can give big, or give small, let’s help Petey get a van.

Jason managed to get over $2000.00 of digital products donated by internet marketers to help with this fundraiser.

http://petey.heartheirstories.com/

If you give the standard donation amount, you can download them as a special gift for your contribution.

If you want to give a different amount, you will not download the gifts, BUT your donation will be 100% tax deductible as a charitable donation for US tax payers.

I want you to know that I am not making anything from this, and neither is Jason.

100% of the proceeds are going to help Petey.

So please take a look at this, and see what you can give.

If you don’t feel comfortable giving $47, then give $20, or $10 or whatever.

On the other hand, some of you may be able to donate $1000 or more, which would make a huge impact.

Secondly, I would like to challenge you to get involved by posting this to your blog, or sending it to your subscribers in the next few days.

I would also like to personally send a challenge to my peers in the internet marketing world to send some serious traffic to Petey’s fundraiser… especially those of you who were mentioned on the site by Jason: Mike Filsaime, Frank Bolella, Stanley Tang, Joel Comm, Mark Joyner, etc.

And I know that there are other prominent marketers who read this newsletter. Please take a moment to pass this along to your subscribers.

Together, we can reach the goal and make a difference in a life.

As always you are welcome to leave your comments here on my blog.

Have a great day!
